Reading books is like a journey- we meet other cultures and get to know their ways of life. It is as if we live many different lives. When we read books, we learn literary language, new words, enrich our own vocabulary and gain knowledge about our surroundings, nature, different people and their culture, history, etc. The knowledge we gain we reading books helps us to better our understanding of the world around us. Books open our minds by opening the windows to different views and lives. They give us the feeling of relaxation and peace and also inspire us. Books can be perfect friends when we feel our life is grey and boring, as they take us to another world and make us discover new things.
In 1920, a sociologist found that an average person spends a fifth of his/her waking time reading. However, during the last decades, the amount of time reading has shrunk drastically, especially among the adults who are now busier with their smartphones and laptops. Although we live in the “Computer Era”, the importance of reading books hasn’t shrunk. This is because the modern society still needs people who know how to read and understand what they have read so that they will be able to use all the information they get out of their reading habits.
Those who have interest for reading and are mastering the reading technique by making it a habit have nothing to lose but gain a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them. Isn’t this enough to understand why it is important to choose the right approach for making your children love reading books. As an adult, it is our responsibility to be a role-model for our kids in terms of book reading. It solely depends on us whether we make our kids fall in love with books or hate them for the rest of their lives.
